I am getting old

"It's the Shit's, the pure shit's!" I looked over at my grandfather wiping his eyes with his white hankercheif not being able to control the sobs. I was driving back to Canada to make sure he got home safely after he and my Grandmother came to visit my mother's grave, and all of us, after my Mom had died only to have my Grandmother just up and die from heart failure from all the stress. I touched his shoulder while I was driving and told him that I loved him and it was the "pure shit's"! and then he proceeded to tell me that what get's worse is that "Everybody you Goddamn knew in this world just dies and your left alone!". He went on to tell me that before I knew it my friends or people in my life would just start to die and soon I wouldn't even be remembered and as he said sarcastically with a half smile and a sob "It's just all shit"! I smile when I remember that time but it sure makes me sad. I have been sad lately. Every one I know or knew or had some sort of meaning in my life is dying.

First Ruth Hiler, a lady who was a great influence in my life growing up, then Karen Vlazney and Chloe Hodge, two great women that I know from church. Then my friend's Dad died the same day my Mom died, April 15th, then Carol died, then one of my friends who is the same age as I with two young kids died of breast cancer, then Michael died. I started reading to him about a month and half ago. He was dying of advanced HIV. My goal is to do one act of service per week. I would go every week and each time I would see him I would laugh and say "What the hell are you doing here!", or "I have other people who want to be read too". He had a great sense of humor but much pain from dying alone with no family support from being gay and his life choices. Hospice didn't call me to tell me he had died so I show up and his room was empty. I got a bit teary but then so happy as his pain was gone.

Then yesterday I saw Farrah Fawcett died. Her story to me was personal because my mom died of cancer and it was a painful death for her. Although, for me in my personal opinion, she didn't try to fight as hard as Farrah did and all I could think about was that damn documentary when her son Redmond climbed in her bed to say his final goodbye and "OH SHIT"!!!! I started to cry. It's just not fair. How many times did I climb into my Mom's bed and lay next to her while we watched Michael Crawford, or I would rub her legs and hands and feet. And then Michael Jackson was a huge deal for me in my life. He was the 80's and so much more.

So, I feel sad. I don't find any solace in the fact that they are in heaven or where we go when we die, if we do indeed go anywhere. I just am getting old and my kids are getting older and it's just too weird. I thought I would be young forever. But my Grandfather is and was right. It's all happening and I see it more often then not.

So, now I wish all the news was just about Jon and Kate +8 (run Jon, run! Get the hell outta there) and the SC Governor who was a tad bit naughty! Instead of more people who meant something in my life leaving my comfortable world.
